There is a trend of poor money habits across America. With 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck and 20% of which earn over $100,000 annually, the future financial state of our country looks bleak. Wants are easily satisfied with a swipe of a plastic card with an, “enjoy now; worry later,” mentality. Also, living paycheck-to-paycheck leaves Americans ill-prepared for unexpected life circumstances (i.e., health issues, workforce reduction, etc.). Lawmakers have attempted to implement consumer protection with the Credit Card Act of 2009 and encourage retirement saving with tax benefits, but unfortunately, this is only a Band-Aid for a much larger problem. Americans need habit reform, which only occurs with personally relevant education. Weak spending and saving habits are being passed from generation to generation, and with society putting so much emphasis on fads and must-haves, our children are having a hard time developing the wealthy habits they need to have a financially secure future.
