The Importance of Volunteering

Oftentimes the true value of volunteering can be underestimated, yet there are an immense number of benefits both professionally and personally that it offers. The wide range of non-profit organizations that need volunteer assistance means that an individual has a strong likelihood of finding a volunteer opportunity in an area of their greatest interest. When I began my search for somewhere to give back, it was very rewarding to find an opportunity to volunteer in an area that really excited me.

Volunteers are vital to many non-profit organizations. Volunteering is also very important for the person doing it because they can give back to their community and obtain a sense of accomplishment for themselves. The life lessons learned, and relationships built along the way lay such a solid foundation for a happier life and a future successful career.

There are abundant reasons to volunteer and here are some of the amazing benefits associated with it:

  1. Sets you apart from others

In almost every interview I have been in, the interviewer’s interest was piqued at the sight of volunteer experience on my resume. It also gave me an opportunity to express my passion and lessons learned from it. This distinction shows a potential employer your drive and passion even when you are not being given any financial reward in return.

  1. Boosts self-confidence and gives a sense of accomplishment

The feeling of pride that I get from an afternoon of volunteering is unmatched.  Overcoming challenges, meeting new people, and offering my time for others has allowed me to have a true sense of identity.

  1. Expands network and builds communication skills

Getting to interact with my fellow volunteers, superior, and others in the organizations I’ve been involved with really allowed me to grow in my confidence when communicating with many different types of people. I have also gained many valuable connections and contacts throughout all of my interactions in volunteer settings.

  1. Teaches responsibility and how to deal with challenges

Although I truly love where I volunteer, as with every organization, some days are definitely easier than others. I have had to learn how to adapt and deal with the challenges presented. As a volunteer, you are relied on every week, so it teaches the responsibility that you must show up on time and be ready to offer a helping hand.

  1. Helping others and impacting community

Throughout my time volunteering, I have thoroughly loved seeing the growth of the individuals I work with. The experience of seeing someone finally break out of their shell and with a huge smile on their face is the best feeling.

Finding somewhere to volunteer and committing your time to that cause is a vital first step in gaining the benefits from volunteering. The more time that you dedicate to an organization, the more benefits you will reap.

There are so many different opportunities to volunteer and many places welcome younger volunteers as well. If interested, make sure to look up opportunities within your community and encourage your child to begin to make a difference in their community.
